What is Families for Literacy?

OC Read's Families for Literacy (FFL) offers programs centered around adult learners in their roles as a parent and as a non-parent, such as their own role as a child, grandparent, or sibling. FFL programs include workshops, intergenerational events, and more—all to inspire a lifelong love of learning and propel learners and their family members of all ages toward a thriving and successful future.

  • Family Literacy Day: An intergenerational celebration of literacy that includes a special guest speaker, local community partners, and engaging literacy-based crafts and activities.
  • Read for the Record: Read for the Record is a worldwide campaign to celebrate early language development by reading the same book together on the same day. OC Read works with all 32 OCPL branches to support storytimes and program events based on the Read for the Record selected title.
  • Outreach Storytimes with the Mobile Library: Family Literacy staff works alongside OCPL’s Mobile Library and community resource centers to conduct outreach storytimes. Outreach storytimes include songs, fingerplays, and dynamic books that model interactive reading skills and encourage caregivers and young children to read together at home.
  • Community Events: Family Literacy staff regularly attend events hosted by community organizations, schools, and family resource centers to share OC Read services.
